Karwa Chauth in 2012



Karva Chauth in 2012 is going to be held on 3rd November as per the traditional Hindu calendar. Karwa Chauth is not just a fast but possess a deeper meaning. It is a fast which is undertaken by married women for their husband. In this fast, they offer prayers for prosperity, longevity and good health of their husband. Over the years, Karwa Chauth fast has gained a very important place among youngsters too, who like to keep fast for their partners on this day. Generally, Karwa chauth fast falls about nine days before Deepavali as Kartik Chauth in October and November. This fast is very popular in North India.
On this auspicious festival, women indulge in a lot of fun and wear colorful cloths as there is a custom of wearing bright colorful clothes along with beautiful ornaments. Moreover, they like to flaunt exquisite henna designs on their hands. This is just a grand festival for the women as they celebrate it with high spirits. Married women follow the predefined rituals and offer prayers to Goddess Gauri to seek her blessings for a happy married life. Besides, this day is best known for the non-stop dancing, competitions, good food and great music which are performed during this festival.
Karwa Chauth fast is one of the most important and awaited occasions for all the women as a husband is said to be more than just a life partner as per the Hindu scriptures. He is supposed to be her protector after she leaves the home of her parents. The husband of women takes care of her food, clothing, shelter, comfort, happiness and respectability, so this bond is known to be a sacrosanct one.

The term 'Chauth' literally means the 'fourth day'. Karwa is an earthen pot with a spout which has an important place in this festival as rituals can’t be performed without it. ‘Karwa’ is a symbol of prosperity and peace.  Some of the rituals which are very necessary to be performed on this very day are as follows: 
                                                                                                                  
·         Married women are supposed to observe a strict fast and stay away from food and water.
·         They are supposed to wake up early in the morning and to wear new and festive clothes.
·         The married woman receives the baya or a basket which are full of goodies from her mother in law before the evening time.
·         Women on this day, worship Shiva, Parvati Ganesh , Kartikeya along with 10 'karwas' (earthen pots) which are filled with sweets.
·         Before sun sets, the women of the locality gather in one house and design puja corner and make other arrangements for it.
·         A decorated puja chowk is placed with a platform against the wall, which is meant to put the puja items and idols as well as pictures of Goddess Karwa or Ma Parvati.
·         At night. Women wait for a glimpse of the moon and see both the moon as well as her husband with the help of a sieve. At last, after taking the first morsel from their husband’s hand, they break their fast.
