Pitru Paksha – Annual Rituals to Dead Ancestors

Pitru s Paksha is one of the traditional rituals executed by individuals for the departed souls of their dead ancestors, parents and relatives. In Hinduism, PitruPaksh Period exists during the Krishna Paksha fortnight in the month of September and October every year. And, it is the ideal time to perform Shradh for offering gratitude to the souls of ancestors, who have contributed a lot towards individual’s welfare in their past or presentlives. This year,PitruPaksha is going to begin on September 30, 2012 that willcontinue till 15th October 2012.
During this fifteen days period of PitruPaksha, peoplecan honor their ancestors by involving in some spiritual practices on the behalf of them. The various practices in which they can engage in this time are meditation, chanting, mantra repetition, and prayer. In this manner, they can invoke the blessing of their ancestors, which is essential in terms of wealth, protection, courage and health.Further, the immense significance of PitruPaksha enables youngsters to perform it with pure heart on the thithi of their ancestor’s death.
Besides, it is a powerful period in which persons make every possible effort to satisfy their Pitras in order to attain grace, wisdom, protection, and lovein life. Alongwith this, I would like to suggest people that they should avoid to start any new project or major undertakings during this time. In addition to this, they should refrain from long journeys like cross-continental or international travel for any kind of purpose rather than religious.
The ritual of Pitru Paksha is the best way to repay the debt of ancestors. Under this ritual, Individuals please as well as content the soul of their ancestors by offering them Pinda and water. These practices play a significant role in protecting their ancestor’s souls from the Hell called 'Punn'. Moreover, it is an important obligation and duty of the youngsters towards their ancestors, which they should perform without committing any type of mistake. Above all, by the virtue of this kind paksha, someone can get relief from distress caused by unsatisfied ancestor’s souls.
Apart from this, individuals should do special care of this ritual in order to eliminate regular conflicts amongst the family membersand for the purpose to overcome some other problems which includes unemployment, serious illness, unsuccessful marriage life, developing addictions, giving birth to a physically or mentally handicapped child and many more. Thus, I would like to recommend some abstentions to all the persons, which they should keep in mind during PitruPaksha period to stay trouble free life such as:
1.     Non-vegetarians should avoid eating non-veg food.
2.     Vegetarians should not consume onion, garlic, outside food, processed foods, drumstick, etc.
