facing any problem related to their in-laws and husband. So, the custom began
to build a relation of friendship with another womanfrom the nearby locality
with whom they can feel comfortable. According to the custom, they treat each
other like real sisters. And, both of them can share their problems and their
inner most thoughts with each other. So the karwachauth festival first began as
a ceremony which offers friendship and later on, it transformed into a ritual
for the well-being of the girl’s husband.

India by the married women. On this festival, they apply henna on their hairas
well as sindooron their forehead. Moreover, a married girldresses in bridal

marriage. Generally, ladies wear red or pink dress on this festival as they
want to look beautiful on this very day to impress their husband.

in the bowl of water. They pray to God with complete faith and devotion for
longevity and prosperity of their husbands. They get food called ‘Sargi’ from
their mother in laws to eat before sunrise in order to start the karvachauth
fast. And, before evening, they receive a basket that contains sweets, mathadi,
fruits and sari. Further, before the sun sets, all the ladies place the image
of Gauri Mata or Goddess Parvati at their puja corner and sit around the image
along with their basket. Then they place a karva and seven pieces of pua in
front of the image and tie a red thread around the karva. In this manner, they
worship goddess Gauri with the help of roliteeka and get her blessings.
Besides, in Karwachauth puja, all ladies sing devotional songs and pass their
thalis in a circle. This custom is called feris.
