Diwali
Festival is one of the biggest festivals, which is going to be held on Nov. 13
this year. Diwali, which is also known as Devali in some regions is popularly
called as the “festival of lights”. It is one of the most important festivals
of India which provides an opportunity for the mankind to share love with each
other. With full enthusiasm, the people of India celebrate Diwali in a very
grand manner.
Diwali
festival is not just a single day occasion but individuals devote complete 5
days to this important festival. Before two days of Diwali, Dhanteras puja is
celebrated by the Indians in a very nice manner. Dhanteras festival is a day
when utensils, ornaments of silver, gold and other items for the homes are
purchased by the people as this is a usual practice. Diwali festival is not a
single festival in itself, but it brings a series of festivals with it.
A
number of legends are associated with the origin of Diwali festival which adds
significance to this festival. The most acceptable and common account of all on
this day is that Lord Rama came back to his kingdom Ayodhya after defeating
Ravana. Apart from relating Diwali festival to the legend of coming back of
Lord Rama to his Kingdom which is particularly famous in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh,
Haryana, Bihar and the surrounding areas, the second legend we can relate to
Diwali Festival is that Diwali signifies Harvest Festival in rural areas.
A
lot of things, people like to do on this auspicious occasion right from litting
up their homes with bulbs and burning the crackers. They clean and whitewash
their homes before 15 days of Diwali. And, theylet their doors open on the Diwali
night as this is a belief that Goddess Lakshmi comes in the night and bestow
money to the members of the house.
During
this Festival, not only young generation, but also aged people and children
enjoy very much. Children wear new clothes on the festival day and burn
crackers with their friends. In the evening time before burning the crackers,
all the persons involve in a practice of performing a Pooja which is purely
dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and God Ganesh. Some foods which are specially
prepared on this festival are offered to the deities at the puja time.
Along
with this, there is a practice of exchanging gifts to each other on this very
day. Thus, individuals like to give sweets and other gifts to their friends and
relatives as well as they like to greet their family members and relatives
through SMS and phones on this carnival.
Diwali Festival is grandly celebrated not only by
Hindus who live in India, but also executed by Hindus who stay outside India
because of its popularity and significance among other festivals of India. They
attach themselves with their motherland by celebrating this occasion. I hope
that Diwali festival will be celebrated with full vigor and zeal in 2012 like every
year. People are eager to celebrate this festival as it comes once in a year.
