According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Diwali is performed on the new moon day that marks the end of Ashwin and beginning of Kartik month. This year, the Diwali will fall on 13th Nov, 2012. The major reason for celebrating the diwali is the returning of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his 14 years of exile as well as the victory over the demon Ravana. It is the occasion that brings happiness and good luck in the people lives.

Diwali Festival 2012 is all about the five days carnival, which starts from the first day of Dhanteras. On this day, people buy gold, steel or new utensils as well as worship Goddess Laxmi for wealth and prosperity. On the second day i.e. Choti Diwali or 'Naraka Chaturdashi', diyas are lit up all around the houses. On the third day i.e. Diwali, devotees visit temples for worshipping Lakshmi and Ganesh as they are the remover of problems. On the fourth day i.e. Govardhan puja/Annakoot, it is said that Krishna defeated the god of rain (Indra) by lifting the mount Govardhan on his finger in order to save people from the floods. On the last and fifth day i.e. Bhai dooj, people can see the love and affection between brothers and sisters as on this day, sisters put tilak on their brother’s forehead. Also, they serve them sweets and pray for their good health and wealth.

Apart from this, people do great preparations before the Diwali carnival like they clean their house and get it white-washed. Also, they make sure that their furniture, doors and windows all should be polished and varnished before Diwali. They decorate their walls by curtains and pictures.
