Dhanteras is the festival of wealth and prosperity and it is celebrated two days before Diwali. The festival of Dhanteras is also known by the names of Dhantrayodashi and Dhanvantari Trayodashi. It marks the beginning of the Diwali celebrations and therefore it is considered as the first day of five days long festivities of Diwali. The word Dhanteras means 'dhan' wealth and 'teras' means thirteenth, so the festival observes on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik (October-November). Goddess Laxmi is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being on this day. There is a tradition and significance of buying the steel, silver or gold on this occasion. It is auspicious because it brings good luck and prosperity. This year, the Dhanteras will be held on 11th Nov 2012.
There is an interesting story concerning on Dhanteras. According to the horoscope of King Hima, his sixteenth year old son was cursed to die by snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage. In order to save son’s life, his wife placed all the ornaments and lot of gold and silver coins everywhere. She kept his husband awake throughout the night. But, when Yam (god of death) arrived due to the cause of snake bite, got amazed by seeing the brilliant lights and could not enter the Prince Chamber. Since from that day, Dhanteras came to be known as the day of "YAMADEEPDAAN" and lamps are kept burning throughout the night. It is believed that worshipping Yam Dev on this day will cancel any premature death.
People celebrate this advantageous festival with great zeal and joy. They believe that it is an ideal time for them to purchase any gold or silver or any new utensils, because it is a sign of good luck. Dhanteras Puja is to be performed in Pradosh kal and Chaughadia Muhurat. Pradosh kal is the time after sunset and Chaughadia Muhurat is meant for businessman. If people complete this puja with full faith within the given time frame, it brings wealth and prosperity for them.
