Dhanteras is the festival of
wealth and prosperity and it is celebrated two days before Diwali. The festival of Dhanteras is also known by the names of
Dhantrayodashi and Dhanvantari Trayodashi. It marks the beginning of the Diwali celebrations and
therefore it is considered as the first day of five days long festivities of
Diwali. The word Dhanteras
means 'dhan' wealth and
'teras' means thirteenth, so the
festival observes on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu
month of Kartik (October-November). Goddess Laxmi is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being on this
day. There is a tradition and significance of buying the steel, silver or gold
on this occasion. It is auspicious because it brings good luck and prosperity.

There
is an interesting story concerning on Dhanteras. According to the horoscope of
King Hima, his sixteenth year old son was cursed to die by snakebite on the
fourth day of his marriage. In order to save son’s life, his wife placed all
the ornaments and lot of gold and silver coins everywhere. She kept his husband
awake throughout the night. But, when Yam (god of death) arrived due to the
cause of snake bite, got amazed by seeing the brilliant lights and could not
enter the Prince Chamber. Since from that day, Dhanteras came to be known as
the day of "YAMADEEPDAAN" and lamps are kept burning
throughout the night. It is believed that worshipping Yam Dev on
this day will cancel any premature death.
People celebrate this advantageous festival with great zeal
and joy. They believe that it is an ideal time for them to purchase any gold or
silver or any new utensils, because it is a sign of good luck. Dhanteras Puja is to be
performed in Pradosh kal and Chaughadia Muhurat.
Pradosh kal is the time after sunset and Chaughadia Muhurat is meant for
businessman. If people complete this puja with full faith within the given time
frame, it brings wealth and prosperity for them.
Laxmi Puja is performed and the first lamps of Diwali are lit
on this day to remove all the negative forces. Bhajans/Songs are sung by the
devotees in the praise of Goddess Laxmi. Moreover, they draw rangoli as well as
small footprints of Goddess Laxmi are made to symbolize her arrival at home.
