Bhai Dooj is one of the famous festivals of Hindus,
celebrated on the fifth day of Diwali. It falls after two days of diwali on
‘Shukla Pakha Dwityiya’ in the month of Kartik. This festival marks the end of
diwali celebrations. This year, Bhai Dooj will be falling on 15th November 2012. This occasion is very popular among all the
persons and it is perrformed in all
parts of the country. This festival is distinguished by different names at
different places like it is known as ‘Bhai-Dooj’ in North India, Bhav-Bij in
Maharashtra and Bhai-Phota in Bengal and ‘Bhai-Teeka in Nepal. This event
indicates the love and affection of brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters put tilak on the forehead of
their brothers, give them sweets and pray for their long life and well being.
There is a story behind Bhai Dooj like all other festivals that is
based on the incident that the Yama (the God of death) went to visit his
sister's house after a long period of time. His sister, Yami was excited and
welcomed him by putting a good luck mark on his forehead for his welfare. Yami
and Yama shared a meal. Yama was thrilled by his sister’s welcome, love and
affection. Then, he proudly blessed her that every year on Bhai Dooj, if a
sister will put Tilak on her brother's forehead then no one would be able to
harm her brother. Since then, the tradition of Tilak ceremony started. And, it is a custom in Maharashtra on bhau-beej that
the sister, whose brother is far away from her, can worship Moon God for the
happy life of her brother.
On this auspicious day, sisters
perform Puja for their brother’s safety and good life. Brothers in return, give
gifts to their sisters as a token of love. It is a day of food-sharing;
gift-giving and reaching out to the inner most depths of the hearts. Delicious
food, new clothes, pure prayers, invaluable gifts and hearts full of care and
friendliness are the pious symbol of Bhai Dooj.
